Scented Geranium

Citronella Scented Geranium, aka Mosquito Plant

There are numerous herbs that repel bugs, and scented geraniums are among them. These fragrant plants are members of the Pelargonium genus, just like the pretty red, pink and white geranium plants you might have in your flower boxes. However, the flowers of scented geraniums are small and not so noticeable. Instead, they are noticed for the aroma of their leaves.

Scented geraniums come in many different shapes, sizes and scents. You can find rose, lemon, mint, chocolate mint, apple, orange, strawberry, apricot, pine, cinnamon and more!

Rose geraniums are used instead of roses in some perfumes. Look for the Citronella scented geraniums, aka Mosquito Plant, if you want to keep mosquitoes away. Throw the leaves of any scented geranium into bath water to soothe the skin, or steep some in witch hazel to use as an astringent for the face.

Leaves  of scented geraniums can be used in the kitchen as well. Choose your "flavor" and add to teas, cakes, jams and jellies.

Finally, don't forget to simply admire them in your garden! Their pretty little flowers bloom from late spring to the end of summer.
