Celebrating God’s Creation!

When nature comes out of its slumber and pushes the first spring flower up through the ground, I am reminded of God’s amazing creation! Throughout the ages, people have celebrated spring and new life in various ways. For Christians in the Northern hemisphere, Easter is a time to celebrate the coming spring and the resurrected Christ! We wear new, brightly colored clothes, we sing the Hallelujah Chorus, and children search for Easter eggs.

I don’t have a reason to hide colorful eggs any longer since my kids are grown and living out of state, but I still got a sweet surprise a few days after Easter when I went to water my flower boxes. As you can tell from the above photo, I have not been watering my pansies well. Perhaps that’s why one of the songbirds I’ve been hearing in the morning decided to use it as a nest! Isn’t nature amazing?

I’m reminded of the many examples in the Bible where God’s people praised Him for his amazing creation, and I think it makes God happy for us to do so. I believe He rejoices when we do what we can to protect his earth and everything in it. That’s why I enjoy celebrating Earth Day as well. People of all faiths come together to pick up garbage, plant flowers, and learn how to avoid polluting our planet.

The earth is so spectacular that it’s easy to understand why people often begin to worship, instead of praise, God’s creation. However, it’s important to remember that God is the one to be worshipped—after all, it’s all here because of Him!

And when you look up into the sky and see the sun, moon, and stars--all the forces of heaven--don't be seduced into worshiping them. The LORD your God gave them to all the peoples of the earth. ~ Deuteronomy 4:19

Instead, sing these praises in your heart, as you celebrate God’s creation on Earth Day and every day!

The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world. ~ Psalm 19:1-4

You alone are the Lord. You made the skies and the heavens and all the stars. You made the earth and the seas and everything in them. You preserve them all, and the angels of heaven worship you. ~ Nehemiah 9:6
