We see many signs of seasonal rhythms in the animal world: bird migration patterns, salmon swimming upstream to mate and die, squirrels gathering acorns for the winter, elk growing and losing antlers, and bears hibernating.  Our festivals and traditions that have developed over the years support this, and harvest festivals are celebrated all around the world. 

In the United States, Thanksgiving is the culmination of our harvest celebrations, and just like the bears and squirrels, we load up on food to subconsciously prepare us for the sparse winter months. We are no longer in touch with seasonal rhythms, and most of us certainly don’t need to eat extra since we are NOT preparing for a winter of possible starvation.
