Today Was Different: A New Detox Smoothie Idea

DSCN2601

Even though it’s cold outside, I’m still drinking my detox smoothie for breakfast every morning. I just feel so much better when I start my day off with a healthy infusion of fruit, vegetables, antioxidants, bioflavonoids, protein and the ever-important ingredient: water!

As much as I like change, I still prefer to eat the same thing most mornings. I just don’t want to think too hard about breakfast, unless it’s a special one like Christmas morning or when my kids are in town. So, I’m perfectly happy to eat the same old blueberry smoothie I’ve been making for years. Sure, I’ll sometimes throw in a slice of ginger, a piece of beet, or some fresh fruit that needs to be used up. But it’s basically the same smoothie.

Well, today was different!

Earlier this week, I saw a post from another website giving the recipe for a “Natural Gatorade.” The general idea was intriguing, but not very practical. After all, how many of us can buy a young coconut and use the fresh juice and meat for a smoothie? And 1 tsp. of cayenne is way too much heat for me. I don’t care how cold it is!

So, here’s my version, inspired, but practical and drinkable!

HOT AND SOUR ORANGE SMOOTHIE

1/4 cup cold water or coconut water

1 orange (I used a blood orange), peeled but with much of the white pith intact

1-2 T. lemon juice

2 T. shredded unsweetened coconut

1 slice ginger (start small and go up from there-depends on the ginger and your taste buds)

1/2 carrot

1/2 frozen banana

1 scoop unsweetened whey or non-dairy protein powder (optional)

Pinch of cayenne

You will need a Vitamix, Ninja, NutriBullet or similar to make this. A normal blender probably won’t work.

Put everything in blender and blend until smooth. Taste and add more ginger, cayenne or lemon juice to taste.

Mmmm, mmmm, good! And good for you too!

This smoothie is filled with vitamin C, bioflavonoids, quercitin, vitamin B, potassium, protein, and good fats, along with ginger and cayenne to aid digestion and metabolism. Enjoy!
