Mystery Cookies

I had some fun with my Bowl-Licking’ pictures, asking my followers on the various social media platforms to guess what I was making based on the photos below. 





I admit, the second one left no clues, but it was entertaining to hear all of the guesses. No one got either bowl right, even though both were about as classic as can be (in my mind)!

That led me to this thought: What was considered classic in my day, is all but forgotten today! Am I that old? Yikes! How many of you bake cookies for your family anymore? I think most people either buy the Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie dough at the grocery store, or bake something very swanky, like Bobby Flay’s Double Chocolate Chunk Cookies or Giada de Laurentiis’ Chocolate Citrus Biscotti.

Actually, I think this is good for my cookbook, since I’ll include a number of “old-fashioned” (or should I say “vintage”) recipes. I’m very excited to think that I might be in the forefront of a new movement — #whatsoldisnewagain.

Grandma’s Oatmeal Molasses Cookies

Well, I admit, these don’t look like oatmeal cookies! I think I used a little too much of the blackstrap molasses. They taste good, but need more brown sugar and less molasses to have the right look and consistency. I’m using my husband’s mother’s recipe and trying to update it with a few healthier ingredients. My husband is in heaven though, because I plan to tweak the recipe and make them again. It’s been many years since I’ve baked so many cookies that were not meant to be taken somewhere else! He keeps asking me, “You mean I can eat these???”

Peanut Butter Cookies

When I was young, peanut butter cookies always had these fork marks. No other cookie did. There was never any question about what these cookies were when you saw them.

Roll them into a little ball and place them on a cookie sheet. Use a fork to make the design.


Since the fork starts to stick, you can either use the modern method and spray it with oil, or use the old method—dip the fork into a plate or shallow bowl of sugar between each cookie.


As an alternative, press down on the first cookie with the bottom of a drinking glass to get it sticky, then press it into a plate of sugar. Continue pressing down the cookies with the sugar coated glass bottom. Finally, make the fork marks.

However you make them, they’re equally yummy and might remind you of happy childhood days.

PS - For Christmas, top with a chocolate kiss instead of making the fork marks, then bake. This was something we only did during the holidays. I guess because chocolate kisses were expensive and a considered a special treat.
