BERT AND ELMO (ERNIE COULDN’T MAKE IT) HELP ME TEACH PARENTS AND PRESCHOOLERS HOW TO EAT HEALTHY SNACKS AND STAY FIT!

I’ve been volunteering at the Raleigh Rescue Mission Preschool for a number of months now. Shortly after beginning there, one of the teachers asked me what I did when I wasn’t volunteering. I explained what I do and was asked if I’d be willing to share my skills with the children. Well, I have taught children’s PraiseMoves classes in the past, but I usually had older children. Teaching 3 and 4 year-olds is a whole different story!

Every week, we get together and learn some postures while reciting Bible verses. We have a lot of fun with it, as we fly around like Eagles or Angels, as we stand tall and still as Mt. Zion, or become the Tree that is blowing in the wind!

The teachers have enjoyed it so much, I was asked to do something special for the monthly Parents’ Day. At the end of the day, instead of picking up the kids and heading home like usual, the parents stay to do an activity with their children and learn a little something. So, we planned a wellness session to show the parents what the children have been learning and to teach some healthy eating habits.

I volunteered to bring a healthy snack, and I figured my best bet would be a fruit tray. But, not just any old fruit tray. I wanted it to capture their attention!

Using strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and oranges, I created ELMO!

I only had one round tray, so I pulled out a long one, sliced some bananas, and came up with Ernie.

I made a simple dip using Greek yogurt and pure maple syrup, then put some in small bowls, along with two blackberries for the eyes.

From the looks of things, it was a success!

We watched a fun video where we sang and danced to a Sesame Street song, “I Love Fruit.”

The other component of the wellness fair was fitness, and I had to get the children’s attention to show their parents what they’ve been learning in our PraiseMoves classes.

Shhhhhhh… Listen up! Let’s be still like a mountain, Mt. Zion, and let’s say our Bible verse:  “Those who trust in the Lord are like Mt. Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever.” Psalm 125:1

We went on to get the parents to join us as we did more postures:

A good time was had by all, and some parents learned for the first time how much their children love fruit! It’s never too early to teach your children good eating and exercise habits. And the best way to do so, is to model it yourself!
